“THE ROCHAMBEAU RAMBLE”, RE-SCHEDULED FOR 10/4
Release Date: September 25, 2008

LOCAL EVENT, “THE ROCHAMBEAU RAMBLE”, RE-SCHEDULED FOR
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4TH AT THE ODELL HOUSE IN GREENBURGH

The Rochambeau Ramble, originally scheduled for Saturday,
September 27th, has been postponed and re-scheduled for Saturday,
October 4th at 1:30pm. The heavy rains predicted for the next couple
days would make the Rochambeau HQ trail that leads to the Odell
Hall unusable and that possibility forced the postponement. Parking
will be available at the lot closest to the entrance of Ridge Road County
Park, and registration for the Ramble will be held in the traffic circle
nearby, starting at 1:30pm. Pre-registration is requested by calling
Town Historian Frank Jazzo at (914) 993-1641 or by sending an e-mail
to fsjazz2004@yahoo.com, no later than Friday, October 3rd. This will
allow us to notify you if, by chance, another postponement is necessary.
It is recommended that proper footware for hiking be worn.

Following registration, the group will be guided along the wooded
Rochambeau trail to and around the Odell House property. The Odell
House is still undergoing restoration so all activities will be held outdoors.
Revolutionary War re-enactors from the Ardsley Middle School Living
History program, led by their advisor, Sean Grady, have been invited
to take part in the Ramble…….A ceremony to dedicate the two Heritage
New York historical markers that have recently been installed on the
property will begin at approximately 2:30pm. Greenburgh Town Super-
visor Paul Feiner and other elected officials have been invited to par-
ticipate.

The Rochambeau Ramble  is one of a total of 202 events that will take place from Saratoga County and the Capital Region to New York City on the weekends of September 13-14, September 20-21 and September 27-28. The Ramble is sponsored annually by the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Hudson River Valley Greenway and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Estuary Program. Now in its ninth year, the popular Ramble has grown from less than 100 events in its initial year, requiring the need for an additional weekend to handle the many events now offered.

The New York Chapter of The Sons of The American Revolution, the Ardsley and Greenburgh Greenway Committees, and the Greenburgh Department of Parks & Recreation
are again co-sponsoring “The Rochambeau Ramble”, which includes a guided tour of the
grounds of the historic Odell House-Rochambeau Headquarters at 425 Ridge Road in the
Hartsdale section of Greenburgh. The early 1700’s farmhouse, which served as headquarters
for French General Rochambeau for six weeks in 1781 during the Philipsburg Encampment,
is undergoing restoration work at the present time. At the site, Robert J.Stackpole, President
of the N.Y.Chapter of the SAR, will speak about the restoration and the future improvements
planned. A brief ceremony will be held to dedicate two new Heritage New York markers on the
property that tell about the history of the house and the Washington-Rochambeau Philipsburg
Encampment. Information will be available for those who wish to take a self-guided auto tour
to visit four other new historical markers along the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary
Route through Ardsley on the way to Dobbs Ferry. The Ramble includes an easy to moderate
walk on a wooded trail from the Ridge Road County Park where parking is available. Follow
-ing the program at the Odell House property, an optional guided walk will be offered to the
nearby Hart’s Brook Park & Preserve, the former Gaisman Estate, where you will learn
about the Preserve’s history and its network of hiking trails..……Pre-registration is requested
for those who wish to take part in “The Rochambeau Ramble”. This can be done by calling
(914) 993-1641 or sending an e-mail to fsjazz2004@yahoo.com. For more information and
directions, see Event # 190 in the HRV Ramble Guide at www.hudsonrivervalley.com/ramble.

The HRV Ramble offers the opportunity for participants to enjoy guided walking, hiking, kayaking and biking experiences, estuary explorations and historic site tours that highlight the significant historical, cultural and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley. Events are offered on every ability level and many are free.

More than 100,000 people participated in the 2007 Ramble.
