SUPERVISOR TO WALK 10 MILES WITH 88 YEAR OLD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FISHER HOUSE TOMORROW
Release Date: September 25, 2009

I will be joining Gil Erskine, an 88 year old on Saturday on a ten mile walk from Scarsdale to North Castle. Mr. Erskine is organizing this fundraising walk to raise funds for Fisher House—which provides housing and funding for wounded members of the military and their families. Mr. Erskine’s brother, a paratrooper, was killed in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. The hike we will go on will pass the 9/11 memorial and finish at the Branch library in North Castle.
The following is a statement from Gil Erskine, a resident of E Hartsdale Ave. I will be walking the entire walk with Mr. Erskine so will be unable to attend other town events on Saturday. If you are interested in contributing to Fisher House you can make a check to Fisher House Foundation and send it to me at Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Ave, White Plains, NY 10607. I will forward to Mr. Erskine.
PAUL FEINER
Greenburgh Town Supervisor
The subject underlined above is my theme. I, Gil Erskine, am a member of the World War II generation. I was a WWII glider pilot and saw combat in the invasion of Southern France. My rank was Flight Officer, and I served for 3-1/2 years. There were about 6,500 glider pilots trained. Now there are only about 450 of us still alive. But I am blessed with good health, and I want to do something meaningful for the wounded soldiers as per above. I am hoping that you and others would like to help.
In order to capture public attention and particularly that of my age group, I intend to hike 10 miles up the Bronx River trail from Scarsdale to just past Kensico Dam. This is not easy to do for somebody 88 -1/2 years old. I plan to do this hike on Saturday, September 26, 2009 starting at 10am from Boniface Circle in Scarsdale, where there is a war memorial to WWII soldiers. My brother’s name is listed there with a star after it. He was a paratrooper killed in the Battle of the Bulge. The hike will pass the 9-11-01 memorial and finish at the Branch Library in North Castle, making the distance about 10 miles. There, I will hand over the funds we have raised to a representative of Fisher House Foundation. (Some may remember my hike of 9/23/07; raised $22,364.) In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be held the following day or the next until we have a good one.
I have chosen Fisher House Foundation, not only for the wonderful work it does in building and providing houses for wounded members of our military and their families, but because the AIP Charity Rating Guide to which I subscribe gives it a rating of A+.
The Fisher House™ program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House™ Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
There is at least one Fisher House™ at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House™ program serves more than 12,000 families, and have made available nearly 3 million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!
Fisher House™ Foundation, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. Donations are tax-deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law.
