Would you like to reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint, but just don’t know how?
On Thursday, Feb. 10, there will be a home energy expo at Dobbs Ferry’s Springhurst School cafeteria at 7 p.m. The event will offer homeowners the opportunity to hear about free and low-cost home energy assessments and available incentives to reduce their home energy bills by 30 percent or more.
The home energy expo is co-sponsored by the Dobbs Ferry Energy Task Force, the Dobbs Ferry PTSA, the Springhurst Ecology Club, the Middle School Ecology Club and the High School Green Club.  According to Marjorie Holderman, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, “This is an opportunity for the full range of Dobbs Ferry community resources committed to sustainability to join together to highlight ways we can work together to preserve our environment.”
When many residents are struggling with high increasing taxes and soaring costs to heat their homes, this event will offer practical solutions to reduce costs while improving comfort.  Homeowners will also learn how these measures, when taken collectively, can make a big difference for our environment.
”Improving energy efficiency saves money, improves comfort, creates local jobs and reduces pollution. It’s important to take advantage of programs available for all these reasons” according to Nina Orville, Chairperson of the Dobbs Ferry Energy Task Force.
The evening will begin with student ecology club members presenting some of their projects. Dobbs Ferry Energy Task Force member Anilla Cherian is coordinating outreach to the schools for this event as well as developing other environment-focused volunteer opportunities for students.
“Showcasing the ideas and harnessing the enthusiasm of our school kids are critical for developing energy and environmental initiatives in Dobbs Ferry and beyond,” Cherlan said.
Thursday’s event will mark the official start of an Energy Task Force goal to have 10 percent of all Dobbs Ferry residents take steps toward improving the energy efficiency of their homes.
Among the speakers are Dobbs Ferry Mayor Hartley Connett,DF Board of Ed President Jeff O'Donnell, and representatives from the school district's ecology clubs.
Also featured will be Elizabeth Silleck—an outreach coordinator for NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority—and Lori Walsh, a Hastings resident who spearheaded a successful effort to encourage homeowners in her community to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
The home energy expo will provide information about the range of energy efficiency and renewable energy incentives and programs available. Representatives from NYSERDA will discuss how to get a comprehensive home energy assessment for little or no cost and information about ConEd’s low-cost energy survey will also be presented. Certified energy efficiency contractors and solar installers will also be on hand to speak with homeowners.
According to its organizers, the purpose of the Expo is to share information and put useful resources in the hands of homeowners. Attendees will be able to get literature and applications, as well as business cards from qualified contractors who can perform home energy improvements.
