Sustainable energy event today in Dobbs...clarification Human Rts Commission...Wear Helmets Bicycle
Release Date: May 10, 2014

The Dobbs Ferry Energy Task Force wanted to extend a personal invitation to the upcoming Sustainable Dobbs event taking place at the Dobbs Ferry High School / Middle School Commons this Saturday, May 10th from 1 - 4:30.
With strong support from elected officials, municipal staff, village committees and the broader community, Dobbs Ferry has accomplished a lot on the sustainability front - and was recently recognized by New York State as a leader in the Climate Smart Communities program.  The Village is saving money, protecting the environment and strengthening community connections through these initiatives - and still there is much more that we can do.

Sustainable Dobbs will start at 1:00 with an expo with sustainability-related vendors and information providers (we have Dobbs residents who will bring their electric cars and answering questions too). At 2:00 we'll then hear from Mayor Connett about the Village's sustainability initiatives, David Yarnold, President and CEO of the National Audubon Society about how our local efforts relate to the big picture, and from me and other members of the Energy Task Force.

We will present awards to Dobbs Ferry residents for their environmental leadership including Marie and Arch McKellar, and those who worked on the Climate Smart program. Perhaps most importantly, we've organized great break-out discussions on topics including energy efficiency and solar installations, opportunities to enhance walking, biking and transit, waste reduction, strengthening our local economy, local food and gardens and an introduction to Mercy College's sustainability club Envisaj Mercy with cutting edge innovations and boundless energy.  This is an opportunity for you to get involved on the issue most important to you!

They will also be hosting a compost bin and rain barrel sale - reserve your bin or barrel (at wholesale cost)

Clarification: Earlier in the week I sent out a release indicating that I have proposed the creation of a Human Rights Commission. This Tuesday, at 11, we will hear what the Yonkers & County Human Rights Commission do.  I do not want to duplicate the work of the County Human Rights Commission. I envision an ALL volunteer Board to work with the county. The volunteers would do outreach to the community, advise residents who they meet with  of county, state and federal programs that they might be eligible to take advantage of, refer residents (after they meet with them) to agencies that might be able to help them. No additional staffing.

Bicycle Sunday continues tomorrow May 11. Please remember to wear helmets. Last week when I was cycling on the parkway I was surprised at how many people DID NOT wear helmets. I love cycling. Over the years I have witnessed a number of bicycle accidents and heard or seen the impact serious head injuries of excellent cyclists who fell off their bicycles. Helmets can save lives and help you avoid serious injuries.
