TOWN OF GREENBURGH MAY CREATE AN ORGANIC RECYCLING COMPOSTING SITE AT AF VETERAN PARK THIS SUMMER---WORKING WITH GREENBURGH NATURE CENTER
CAN WE REDUCE OUR WASTE BY 30% YES, IF PEOPLE SOURCE SEPARATE
The Greenburgh Town Board is holding a very important public hearing on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM on a proposal to rezone the Landmark at Eastview property into a Planned Economic Development district. The rezone, if approved, will provide the property owner with the ability to use the land for a variety of purposes. This property is approximately 100 acres and is the home of Regeneron, one of the world's most prestigious bio tech companies (Regeneron was rated the #1 bio tech company to work at in the WORLD). A link to the proposed rezone --which lists what the property could be used for- is posted below. Once the rezone is approved there could be significant economic development (jobs and taxes!) from that site. I also believe that the rezone, if approved, will generate more momentum for the 9A bypass-which has been pushed for by many people for decades.
Last month I asked Peter Gilpatric of Landmark at Eastview if he would consider creating an organic composting site at the landmark for his tenants once the town rezones the property. He was very open minded to the concept. I'm encouraged! If the Landmark creates an organic recycling compost site on their property for their tenants it could generate significant momentum that could encourage more organic recycling throughout Westchester! If schools encourage source separation--if major land owners encourage their tenants to source separate --if major businesses and governments do the same ---we will be able to REDUCE our waste and save significant taxpayer dollars.

Communities around the world are increasing recycling rates, saving money on garbage and becoming more earth friendly by encouraging residents to separate food and other organic waste.
Acceptable items for Food & Organic Waste Recycling can include:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat, poultry, seafood (bones and shells)
- Bakery items and ingredients
- Eggs
- Milk, juices and cartons
- Plants and cut flowers
- Ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese
Earlier this year WCBS radio highlighted an initiative started by Anna Giordano of Westchester School Rcycling & Compostng Alliance:
to encourage organic recycling in the schools. Hastings High School retained the services of Anna's company. Students have started to source separate. The students are leading by example. Unfortunately, because there are no compost sites in Westchester the organic waste is shipped to Connecticut--which is costly and not very efficient.
The Greenburgh Town Board met with representatives of the Greenburgh Nature Center last month and we discussed testing out organic recycling by creating a composting site at AF Veteran park this summer for organic recycling. If people would recycle their organic waste we could reduce the garbage that we pick up by about 30%. The Town Board has contracted with the Greenburgh Nature Center to oversee the implementation of an organic recycling program.
