PLEASE ATTEND TONIGHTS MEETING OF THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AT THE MARRIOTT IN TARRYTOWN  7-9 PM
URGE THE NRC TO DENY INDIAN POINT’S RE-LICENSING REQUEST…

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be holding a public meeting at the Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown tonight from 7 pm to 9 PM. They are reviewing a request to re-license Indian Point. I plan to attend the meeting and will once again endorse plans to close down the plant. The May 9th transformer fire  was Indian Point’s  3rd Transformer Fire since 2007. I believe that the plant should be decommissioned. I do not believe that Entergy implemented an effective maintenance program. They should be shut down! The Riverkeeper pointed out that water from an unknown source was found in the electrical supply room at Indian Point after the transformer failure occurred.

Is Entergy’s fire protection program inadequate? The NRC previously granted Indian Point DOZENS of exemptions from critical fire safety requirements, including one that reduced the requirement that insulation from fire last one hour to just 24 minutes.

FERC recently approved expansion of 2 high-pressure, natural gas pipelines from 36” to 42” about 105 feet from Indian Point’s vital structures—a safety concern.

Two different earthquake fault lines cross just north of Indian Point.  The NRC revised its estimates of earthquake risk in 2010, concluding that Indian Point is the most likely nuke plant in the nation to experience core damage due to an earthquake.

The NRC has relaxed requirements for insulation on electrical cables controlling the reactors, reduced inspection requirements on rusting containment domes and leaking spent fuel pools.

NYC and Greenburgh’s drinking water reservoir lies fifteen miles from Indian Point. Nine million people depend on the safety of the water supply every day.

The evacuation plans are inadequate. Does anyone in Greenburgh know what to do if there would be a meltdown?  Where would we run to if there is a meltdown?
