PETS ALIVE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL DONATED LAND IF THEY SHUT DOWN ANIMAL SHELTER
Release Date: July 19, 2015

PETS ALIVE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL DONATED LAND THAT USED TO HOUSE ELMSFORD ANIMAL SHELTER IF SHELTER CLOSES---LAND WAS DONATED WITH ONE PURPOSE--TO BE USED AS A NO KILL ANIMAL SHELTER

The decision of Pets Alive, which had taken over the Elmsford Animal shelter, to close down the Westchester shelter raises an important question: Who gets to keep the land?

When I was a member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators in the 1980s and early in my tenure as Town Supervisor - I worked very hard to get the land donated to the shelter. Inasmuch as the land was donated for the sole purpose of being used as a no kill animal shelter - I do not believe that Pets Alive should be able to keep the land if they are not going to use the land for a shelter.

The building was built with private donations. Hundreds of volunteers have worked long and hard to provide important services to animal lovers. Many terrific matches were made by the shelter volunteers - helping to find homes for pets.

Pets Alive should either give the land back to animal rights advocates who can take over the responsibilities of the shelter or if they sell the land 100% of the funds raised should be used to find another location in Westchester County.

I have asked the Greenburgh Town Attorney to review the deed to determine if the town has any rights since we were heavily involved in helping the shelter get the land donated to them.  The shelter did not pay for the property. I will also bring this up before the Town Board.

If you would like to help figure out a way to keep the former Elmsford Animal shelter operating and providing matches for pet lovers and pets  - please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com
