Expert Panel to Discuss Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Youth
Sudden cardiac arrest is not just killing old people. It is a leading cause of sudden death in young people, claiming the lives of an estimated 5,700 to 14,000 children per year. Parent Heart Watch (PHW) serves as the national voice in protecting youth from sudden cardiac arrest. In an effort to raise awareness and protect our children, three members of the PHW Board of Directors will be interviewed by Greenburgh Town Supervisor, Paul Feiner on WVOX 1460-AM radio on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 10 AM to 11 AM. The program is also streamed live onwww.wvox.com. Following the interview, a noon press conference will be held at Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Ave, White Plains.
The panel will feature Karen Acompora, who lost her 14 year old son Louis to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in 2000; Melinda Murray, who lost her 17 year old son Dominic when he suffered SCA during a basketball game at Farmingdale State College; and Steve Tannenbaum, who survived sudden cardiac arrest in 2009 due to the preparedness of two strangers.
The panel will discuss the mission of Parent Heart Watch and its members across the country to prevent sudden cardiac death in youth through early detection and being prepared in case of emergency. Early detection means screening children with a physical examination, personal and family history, and an electrocardiogram (ECG). Currently, 49 PHW member organizations in 29 states offer free or affordable heart screenings that include an electrocardiogram (ECG) and/or echocardiogram. Being prepared includes having a written and well-practiced cardiac emergency response plan, operational automated external defibrillators (AEDs) wherever kids congregate, in addition to people trained in CPR and AED use.
