Task Force being formed to promote motorcycle safety --yesterday: third fatal accident in a few week
Release Date: September 01, 2016

Another horrible motorcycle accident - the third in recent weeks.  A motorcyclist died on the Tappan Zee bridge on August 31st.  This fatality came a short time after a motorcyclist died in an accident in Mount Pleasant.  A short time before that accident a motorcyclist was killed in front of Greenburgh Town Hall.

The three recent fatalities have received some local attention because the deceased were from our communities and were known by our neighbors. However, each year up to 5,000 people a year die in motorcycle related accidents. Motorcycle accidents typically occur when motorcyclists are speeding or when there is a head on collision, with motorists who fail to spot the motorcycle.

I'm organizing an effort with motorcyclists to promote motorcycle safety. We want to encourage motorcyclists to drive safer. And, also hope to encourage motorists to drive safely in the presence of motorcyclists. We had our first meeting less than two weeks ago and am planning another strategy meeting on the 13th of September.  Among possible initiatives: A motorcycle motorcade from one accident scene to another. Placing the remnants of motorcycles involved in accidents at the scene of accidents. This is done in California and around the nation and helps to persuade drivers of the dangers of being careless. Or, doing something similar to what was done on 119 after a fatal bicycle accident: a white motorcycle instead of the remnants.

If you would be interested in getting involved in the effort to promote motorcycle/motorist safety please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. If you have any suggestions that our task force could consider recommending to promote safety among motorists and motorcyclists please advise.
