Release Date: January 08, 2017

GREENBURGH TOWN BOARD CANCELS TUESDAY MORNING WORK SESSION SO WE CAN ATTEND GOVERNOR'S STATE OF THE STATE MESSAGE AND THANK GOVERNOR AND STAFF FOR HELPING TOWN

--THE NEW HOTEL TAX THAT WILL GENERATE A MILLION $ TO THE TOWN ANNUALLY...REASSESSMENT PHASE IN LAW THE GOVERNOR SIGNED...ANNOUNCEMENT TO SHUT DOWN INDIAN POINT

WE ARE GOING TO PUSH FOR OUR 2017 NYS GOALS

Governor Andrew Cuomo will be presenting his annual State of the State Message to Westchester County civic leaders on Tuesday morning. The members of the Greenburgh Town Board have decided to cancel our Tuesday morning work session to attend the State of the State message.

....and to THANK THE GOVERNOR  and his team  for being so responsive to Greenburgh concerns during the past year! On New Year's eve the Governor signed legislation into law authorizing authorizing the town to have a 3% hotel tax. The tax will generate about a million dollars a year in additional revenue to unincorporated Greenburgh. We have been pushing for the legislation since 2009.   Months earlier the Governor signed legislation into law enabling the town to phase in reassessment impacts for those most negatively impacted. Both laws were introduced by Assemblyman Tom Abinanti and State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins who also worked very hard to help the town.

Days ago it was announced that the Governor was close to reaching an agreement that will close down Indian Point.  Shortly after 9/11 the Greenburgh Town Board became the first local government in the Hudson Valley to pass a resolution calling for the closure of Indian Point. I helped organize an effort that resulted in resolutions from dozens of other local governments and officials around the Hudson Valley calling for the closure of Indian Point.  We have approved other resolutions calling for the closure of Indian Point since 9/11, worked with a coalition of groups fighting Indian Point  and have testified at NRC hearings calling for the closure of Indian Point. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of former State Assemblyman Richard Brodsky who worked very hard on this initiative. The work of hundreds of civic leaders and concerned citizens generated the momentum that led to the closure.  This victory proves that citizens can be heard.

OUR 2017 NYS PRIORITIES

Although we are more than grateful to the Governor for his effective leadership during the past year - more  has to be done!  In 2017 we will be pushing NYS to

  1) fund needed safety improvements on Jackson Ave

  2) Approve funding for sidewalks on NYS roads located in Greenburgh

  3) Approve legislation to allow the town to issue residents only parking permits to residents who live near the Hartsdale, Scarsdale and N White Plains train station.

  4) Encouraging NYS to help local governments address infrastructure needs. Two options: additional state funding for local governments. Exempt infrastructure spending from the tax cap formula. Deferring infrastructure will cost more in the long run.

At the Governor's State of the State address we will network with New York State leaders  to enhance our chances of helping the town succeed in having another successful legislative yea in Albany.
