HARSHITA SHET WON GREENBURGH CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT SPELLING BEE CONTEST FOR 4th YEAR IN A ROW

HARSHITA WILL COMPETE IN NATIONAL SCRIPPS SPELLING BEE CONTEST IN DC THIS SPRING

HARSHITA  RECEIVED MORE GREAT NEWS RECENTLY--SHE AND XPOSURE AFTER SCHOOL STUDENTS NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY

Harshita has been a member of the Xposure Greenburgh afterschool program for over 6 years  and is a seventh grader. Last night, for the 4th year in a row, she won the Greenburgh Spelling Bee contest at the RJ Bailey School in Greenburgh.  She will represent the town and Greenburgh school district this spring in DC again-- as a contestant in the National Scripps Spelling Bee contest in Washington.  Hopefully, Harshita will become our national Spelling Bee Champ!

Five years ago  Dr. Tahira Chase,Greenburgh Central Superintendent  worked with William L. Carter, Commissioner of the Theodore Young Community Center in offering students the opportunity to compete in one of the most competitive programs for students nationally. The Greenburgh school district is the only school district in Westchester County (to my knowledge) competing in this contest. As Lavette Carter of the William L. Carter Foundation stated "seeing our young people succeed is intriguing and something Bill (who passed away last year) would be proud to see."   The school district named the Greenburgh Spelling Bee contest in memory of Bill Carter last year.

Harshita is having an exciting 2017. A few years ago she was notified that she was nominated for a NY Emmy for a documentary she and 3 other XPOSURE after school  Greenburgh students (Adrianna Murrell, Sydney Jackson, Jalisse Higinio) produced for their XPOSURE GREENBURGH WXGB FUN FINANCE RADIO SHOW. The documentary entitled, "Whatever Happened to Black Wall Street?" features Dr. Olivia Hooker, a Greenburgh resident/icon and history making trailblazer. Raymond L. Thomas Jr, Executive Director of the Xposure Foundation is proud that Harshita and other outstanding young people have taken advantage of the many innovative programs that Xposure offers.

Behind every great student are great teachers. The teachers at the Greenburgh schools, Xposure and Harshita's parents deserve praise for inspiring Harshita, discovering her and motivating her to study as hard as she has. She's destined for success.

THOSE WHO COMPETED BUT DID NOT WIN WERE ALSO VERY INSPIRING. After Harshita was declared the winner last night most of her competitors hugged her, congratulated her. The students can teach us all a lesson: how to be gracious in success and disappointment. The other contestants were smart, were competitive challengers, made a great impression and also have great futures ahead. It's nice to see people rooting for the success and happiness of others.
