Crime Trends and Public Safety Tips
Release Date: November 15, 2017

Good Evening,

Now that the clocks have been rolled back to Standard Time, we are into burglary season. We are continuing to do our anti-burglary patrols, but we are most effective when we partner with you. Please see the attached letter that speaks to conditions that should be avoided to protect against this crime.

Also, we have teamed up again with “Ring.com” to encourage residents to consider investing in one or more of their products. The Ring Doorbell allows homeowners to view live-time video of their front door (activated by motion and by physically depressing the doorbell button) and communicate with individuals on their property. All Ring products are activated by motion and come with Ring Cloud Recording at a reasonable price. Ring.com has started “Ring Neighborhoods” which allows residents to voluntarily share their videos with law enforcement in the event of a crime in your neighborhood. The attached flyer from Ring has a discount code for Greenburgh residents, but I encourage all residents to shop around to get the best deal available.

One trend that continues to plague most Westchester communities is the crime of larceny from unlocked cars during the overnight hours. Please remember to remove/hide valuables and to lock your cars at all times. We will be starting an initiative very soon to remind residents to lock their cars, take their keys and remove/hide their belongings. We have made numerous arrests of individuals for these crimes, and it has made a difference, but the crimes are continuing throughout the county.

We continue to see different scams attempted via telephone and computer. Please do not send money (via Western Union, pre-paid cash cards, green dot money cards or any other method of payment) to anyone that solicits over the phone. Reputable entities generally do not solicit money over the phone. I have attached a list of recent scams that have been reported to us.

Our Winter Snow Parking Rules commence December 1st. Parking is prohibited on all town roads (with the exception of those enumerated in the Town Code) between the hours of 1:00am and 6:00am. The Snow Emergency effecting metered parking spaces along East Hartsdale Avenue and Columbia Avenue has been permanently added to the Town Code.

In closing, we ask that you help us to keep you safe. If you see something suspicious, say something. Please call us at 914-989-1700 or via 911. Be alert of your surroundings and put the phones down when driving and walking.

Respectfully,

Chief Chris McNerney
