NYS REGIONAL TRAFFIC SAFETY & MOBILITY GROUP TO INVESTIGATE SAFETY OF W HARTSDALE AVE
Release Date: June 28, 2018

In recent years one of the most frustrating experiences has been West Hartsdale Ave.  We desperately need a sidewalk on the Avenue so pedestrians and cyclists could walk or cycle to the Hartsdale train station and to the shops on E Hartsdale Ave and Central Ave. A sidewalk would be an enormous safety enhancement. I have written dozens of letters, spoken with officials –and so far have had no luck.  But, won’t give up.

I just received the most positive response from NYS indicating that the NYS DOT will refer this matter to their Regional Traffic Safety & Mobility Group for further investigation.  If NYS doesn’t want to appropriate funds for a sidewalk one much less expensive initiative would be to expand the shoulder at some sections of the avenue. I’m a cyclist and the small shoulder and pavement  are at different grade levels.  The pitch drastically drops on the shoulder area which could be extremely hazardous for cyclists.  There could be liability to NYS in the current climate of lawsuits.  It would be cheaper to make the shoulder safer than to do nothing.

If you have had experiences cycling or walking up and down W Hartsdale Ave and e mail me I will share all the e mails with all NYS officials.
