The Greenburgh Town Board held a special meeting Thursday evening, Aug. 24 at which it set a time frame to develop a final plan for a temporary headquarters for the Greenburgh Public Library while it undergoes a renovation and reconstruction.

At Thursday’s meeting, the Town Board took major steps towards accomplishing this goal. Two resolutions were adopted, both putting a hard date on when plans for a temporary location must be finalized.

The Board has two options for a temporary headquarters. One is to rent a property large enough to hold the library in a form that can accommodate all patrons at one site. That option is contingent upon an independent evaluator looking at the tax component of the agreement and opining that it is fair to the Town of Greenburgh and its residents. That opinion, along with a final lease agreement approved by the Town Attorney, must be submitted to the Town Board no later than Tuesday, Sept. 5 for a vote that evening at a special meeting.

If that agreement is not fair as determined by the independent evaluator, or if the Town Attorney does not approve of the lease agreement, the Town would instead create a satellite library system at several locations in Town owned buildings. A plan to implement the satellite libraries must be submitted to the Town Board and the public no later than Friday, Sept. 1, and will be voted on at a special meeting of the board to be held Tuesday, Sept. 5.

These measures were approved unanimously by all five members of the Town Board: Supervisor Paul Feiner; and Councilmembers Eddie Mae Barnes, Steve Bass, Diana Juettner, and Francis Sheehan.

In addition, earlier this week, the Town Board took another step to protect the taxpayers of Greenburgh through the renovation and construction process. The Board authorized the solicitation of a request for proposals to retain the services of an attorney to examine documents related to the construction of the library.
