The Westchester Library System Board of Trustees will be meeting on Tuesday, October 24th to solicit public comment concerning the Ardsley/Elmsford contract for library services. The meeting will begin at 6 PMin the first floor conference room at WLS headquarters, 540 White Plains Road, Tarrytown. Those wishing to comment on this issue will be allowed to speak for 3 minutes each on a first come basis.
The Westchester Library System (WLS) is a state charted, cooperative library system serving all 38 Westchestermember libraries and the county’s citizens.
The Ardsley/Elmsford agreement will change the nature of the Westchester Library system, if it is allowed to stand. Communities around the county may close down small libraries and shop around for inexpensive agreements elsewhere to provide their residents with library cards. Why spend over a million dollars on a library when a community might be willing to issue library cards to Westchesterresidents who live in other localities for $100,000, $50,000 or less? At the present time anyone in Westchesterwho has a library card from any library in Westchestercan use their library card anywhere in the county. So – issuing a card does not cost the library much.
I will be attending the hearing. I urge residents and elected officials to attend this meeting. The town will be losing over a million dollars over a four year period.
This is not about Elmsford…this is not about Ardsley…this is an important matter that will impact the Westchester Library system for years to come. I am urging the Town Board to take a break from our work session on Tuesday so all Town Board members can participate at this important hearing.
