Public hearing held on Con Ed/tree law
Release Date: June 14, 2007

The Greenburgh Town Board held a public hearing Wednesday night on a law I introduced last month that will regulate how and when Con Edison can cut down trees on private and public rights-of-way in unincorporated Greenburgh.

The proposed law was presented to the public at the previous Town Board meeting after working with members of the community to construct the legislation that would limit tree cutting activities on distribution lines.

We can not allow Con Edison to cut trees in Greenburgh based on economic decisions.

Con Edisonwill be required to replant trees under certain circumstances when a home owner or the Town requires it. Replanting would be necessary as trees in certain areas are responsible for protecting our Town against soil erosion, preventing floods, and removing CO2 from the air. The law is designed to work cooperatively with Con Edison to help prevent weather-related power outages.

I believe this law is critical to provide clean air and prevent flooding.

The Greenburgh Town Board will hold a special meeting Tuesday, June 19 at 5 p.m.to vote on the new law.
