URGING LIBRARY TO RECONSIDER DECISION TO REMOVE DROP OFF BOX ON E HARTSDALE AVE
Release Date: January 14, 2008

TO: LIBRARY BOARD
PLEASE REINSTATE THE DROP OFF BOX ON E HARTSDALE AVE
PLEASE REINSTATE CYBERMOBILE
PLEASE REINSTATE SUNDAY HOURS

I am urging the Library Board to reconsider their decision to remove the box on E Hartsdale Ave in front of the train station for dropping off library materials. There's a notice that the box will be removed on January 18th. This is sad. The library and town has always been known for putting service first. The removal of this convenient drop off box is an unnecessary step backwards. Certainly, there are librarians who can be assigned the responsibility of removing library materials from the box on a regular basis. If the Library Board refuses to assign their own personnel for this responsibility - I will find town employees who would provide this service to the community. I am even willing to do the pick up the materials myself (no overtime, no additional cost to the taxpayers).
The Library Board is independent of the Town Board. The Town Board appoints members of the Library Board. But--once the Library Board membership is appointed Library Board members can shift funds that have been appropriated in the budget without obtaining consent from the elected Town Board. Members of the Library Board are appointed for fixed terms. There is currently one vacancy on the Library Board.
In recent weeks I have objected to the following cuts:
1) Elimination of the cybermobile. I am urging the Library to reinstate the cybermobile. I am also working to obtain foundation grants and am urging the Library & Town Board to support placing advertisements on the cybermobile. This will be given high priority in the coming weeks. There is no need to cut the cybermobile. Other purchasing/spending could be deferred until the new library opens.
2) Elimination of Sunday hours--many people depend on Sunday hours. They work during the week. THe only time they use the library is on weekends. This is an unnecessary cut. If hours have to be cut - there are other cuts that would impact residents much less seriously.
PRIOR TO THE REFERENDUM THAT LED TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW LIBRARY- the Library Board promised residents that there would be additional outreach during the construction period. The elimination of the cybermobile, book drop off, Sunday hours is contrary to the promises that were made.
A COMMUNITY MEETING WILL BE HELD SOON IF THE ABOVE MATTERS ARE NOT RESOLVED TO THE COMMUNITY'S SATISFACTION.
PAUL FEINER
