A natural history exhibit -- “The Greening of Greenbugh”  -- opened at the Greenburgh Nature Center on Sunday, January 26th.  The exhibit will run daily except Fridays through June 26th.  Admission is free with paid museum admission.

The exhibit, which was prepared by the professional staff of the Greenburgh Nature Center, is a celebration of the acquisition of wildlife habitat and the protection of the environment in the Town of Greenburgh from 1973 to 2003.

The exhibit begins with a “Welcome to Greenburgh” section, introducing visitors to the geography and land use patterns of the Town, through maps, photographs and other graphic materials.  In the late 1960’s the Town of Greenburgh sponsored a master plan process, in which citizens surveyed felt that rapid population growth was their main concern.

As a result, the Town sought to acquire open space, both for active recreation, and as wildlife preserves.  The Greenburgh Nature Center, purchased in 1973, was the first step.  The second section of the exhibit highlights to move to acquire the 33 acre property off Central Avenue, and the many valuable environmental resources it contains.

A third section focuses on the types of plants and animals that are important in Greenburgh’s woodland, particularly the Eastern box turtles.              Environmental Protection is the focus of the fourth section, with pictures and charts showing how the Town has acted to eliminate the use of pesticides, protect biodiversity, protect against the mistreatment of wild animals, promote energy conservation and recycling, establish conservation districts, and set aside public funds for purchasing critical habitat areas.

Section five -- “Hitting Habitat Preserve Overdrive” highlights the acquisition from 1992 of three major preserves -- the 32 acre East Irvington, 122 acre Harts Brook, and 41 acre Glenville Woods Preserves.  Aerial photos, maps, and colorful graphics are used to show why and how these properties were important.

Finally, the exhibit presents a “What You Can Do” section, including two major habitat issues being faced at present -- the 199 acre “Taxter Ridge” property which the Town is seeking to acquire, and the Greenways Project -- the goal of linking all Greenburgh’s wildlife habitat areas through walking and/or biking trails.  These preserves would also be linked to the other preserves throughout the county.

“Hands on” wildlife habitat games for children and six live animal displays will be included, as will a booklet that provides more detailed information for adults and youth group leaders.

The Greenburgh Nature Center's Manor House is open daily except Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m.  Weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Admission is free for GNC members.  For non-members, admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and $2 for children ages 2-12.  Children under 2 are free.  Greenburgh residents with Town parks cards pay half-price.  The grounds are open every day from dawn to dusk.  The Center is located on Dromore Road off Central Avenue in the "Scarsdale" section of Greenburgh.
