Greenburgh Nature Center Garners Recognition

The Greenburgh Nature Center (“GNC”) has recently been acknowledged by two respected organizations for the Center’s work in the field of environmental education. “We’re thrilled with these accolades and are glad to be making strides in advancing our mission to promote the appreciation of nature and the environment,” said GNC Executive Director Kurt Hundgen.

In the July issue of Westchester Family Magazine, the GNC was named a “Family Favorite” destination under the “Family Outings” category. The designation was determined by readers of the publication in surveys filled out online and mailed in, as well as by attendees at local charity events the publication’s staff attended.  Westchester Family, a member of the parenthood.com network, is a guide to events, activities and parenting resources in the area.

The GNC also recently received a “2008-2009 Best Field Trainer Award” from Million Trees NYC. Million Trees NYC is an initiative of the New York Restoration Project and the New York City Parks Department that provides on-the-job training for young adults interested in pursuing “green collar” careers in the fields of arboriculture, ecological restoration and urban landscaping. Participants in the Million Trees training program visited the GNC to receive instruction in habitat management of invasive species, trail maintenance and sustainable gardening. The main objective of the training program is to help participants develop marketable employment skills, reconnect to the community and become self sufficient members of society.

The Greenburgh Nature Center is a not-for-profit corporation that operates programs and exhibits on a 33-acre "oasis of greenspace" that is part of the Town of Greenburgh's park system. The Center is located on Dromore Road, just off Central Avenue in Scarsdale, NY.
