WHAT’S AT STAKE? Last month Riverkeeper raised safety and security concerns regarding Entergy's proposal to store 1,275 tons of spent nuclear fuel, classified as high-level radioactive waste, in a controversial dry cask storage system. Nuclear watchdogs - as well as government and industry officials - contend that the casks are poorly made, unreliable, and vulnerable to terrorist acts. Currently, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is planning to hold a technical meeting in WestchesterCountyat which Entergy will present its proposal to store the plant’s spent fuel. The meeting - which is the first real opportunity to learn about the proposal - was originally planned for the NRC's regional headquarters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania- approximately 156 miles from Buchanan, NYwhere Indian Point is located. In response to calls and letters from Riverkeeper, along with the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition and elected officials, the NRC agreed to move the meeting to WestchesterCounty. We want aformal adjudicatory hearing and a formal public hearing on the proposed dry cask storage system to allow for more meaningful input. While the informal public meeting that the NRC is planning will allow for public statements and will feature a Q&A session, a formal hearing process will create an official record of individual comments and will ultimately result in a much more sound system of storing spent fuel at Indian Point.
