8,008 without power (why it's up)..3 crews...house angels available to help you with shelter
Release Date: November 03, 2012

I spent a few hours with United States Congresswoman Nita Lowey at the Greenburgh Library chatting with hundreds of residents out of power. Congresswoman Lowey home has also been without power since the hurricane and said that she’s FREEZING. She’s working hard to press Con Ed to send more crews to Greenburgh and to Westchester.

There are now 8,008 people without power in Greenburgh. It’s up a bit from previous reports. The reason: Sometimes Con Ed has to de-energize the system while working on wires. We now have 3 crews working with us – more are on the way. Additional out of state crews are working the area –but not reporting to the Greenburgh command center. We are hoping that Con Ed will recognize the importance of sending us more crews.

Although some families have accepted offers of house angels – and are temporarily moving into homes with power –I can match residents who are out of power with people who don’t have power. Please e mail me if you would like to stay at someone’s house or if you want to be on the list of people who are house angels (in the event that more people want to move out of their homes). The Theodore Young Community Center is open 24 hours –as an overnight shelter. The center is located on Manhattan Ave. If you don’t want to sleep at the center – you can take showers there. 989-3600.

Hat’s off to the Greenburgh police, public works employees, Theodore Young Community Center staff, and the Library for their hard work during this emergency. I spent a few hours at the Greenburgh Library today and was amazed at how nice our “powerless residents” were –despite the fact that they are cold at night, out of power and uncomfortable. One resident said that “it’s so cold that his smile is frozen on his face.” Many people really appreciate the service the library has offered the community during this crisis.
