Building relationships between police and youth--2 former grads of police youth camp now officers!
Release Date: August 25, 2015

TWO GRADUATES OF GREENBURGH POLICE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP HAVE BECOME GREENBURGH POLICE OFFICERS
In contrast to the problems that police departments around the country are experiencing dealing with young people - the Greenburgh police department continues to work hard at building relationships and understanding between police and youth. Our summer youth police camp has inspired two graduates to go into law enforcement --have become police officers!

The Summer Police Camp had their graduation ceremonies this past weekend -it's 17th year 28 teens from Greenburgh completed an intensive program aimed at teaching students about the police department and improving their perceptions of law enforcement. Two previous graduates Herman Killiebrew and Peter Schmidt Jr were hired by the Greenburgh Police Department as police officers after they completed their education.

In past years some graduates and instructors have said that  the program is more like boot camp than summer camp. The kids get to experience what a real police recruit would go through at the academy. The  program included physical training, passing a first aid test, CPR training, a water safety course and even learning police stop and arrest tactics.  The program teaches children to respect themselves, each other and to appreciate the work of the police department.
