Library expansion referendum approved
Release Date: May 11, 2005

2252 (Yes) 2186 (No)

Greenburgh voters approved the 19.8 million library expansion referendum by 2252 to 2186. 15.7% of the eligible voters cast their ballots.

I am pleased that our efforts resulted in a greater turnout than might have otherwise been achieved for a May (rather than November) referendum. Voters cast an informed ballot. The library had organized over 34 forums on the library expansion before the referendum. I had distributed a neutral handout to voters – providing residents of Greenburgh with both sides of the issue. A town meeting last week was televised live on cable TV and repeated non stop from Wednesday night till Tuesday (the date of the referendum).

The people have spoken. Now it’s incumbent on all of us to work hard to make the library expansion a great success and to keep costs within budget.
