A REPORT OF MANY ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES OFFERED TO VETERANS BY OUR ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Earlier this year the Greenburgh Town Board created a Veterans Advisory Committee. This newsflash will provide you with information about what they are doing.  I have invited other Advisory and Policy making citizen boards to also provide you with a report of activities they are involved in.  We appreciate the hard work of our volunteers.

TOWN OF GREENBURGH – VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

MAY 2016 VETERANS NEWSFLASH

 

On an ongoing basis your Town of Greenburgh, Veterans Advisory Committee, will provide town veterans an update on the committee’s activities. The Veterans Advisory Committee meets on the 1st Monday of the Month at 9:00AM in the Greenburgh Town Hall. Town veterans are welcome to attend.

 

HARTSDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK:

Construction has begun on the new Greenburgh Veterans Memorial at De Santi Plaza opposite the southbound side of the Hartsdale train station. The new park will include a new Veterans Memorial honoring all veterans and active duty personnel. The dedication ceremony for the park is scheduled for Veterans Day, November 11, 2016 at 2:00PM.Veterans, families, and the public are encouraged to attend this very worthy, and historic event. In financial support of the memorial, donations can be made at the “Greenburgh Veterans Memorial Fund” at www.GoFundMe”.com. Donor names will be displayed in the Veterans Living History Room at the Greenburgh Public Library.

 

VETERAN LIVING HISTORY PROJECT:

Studio videotaping of World War II Veterans is continuing. This project was started by Alan Hochberg, and Steve Wittenberg to memorialize the stories of our WW-II veterans. Taping has started of Korean War Veterans. The stories are shown on the Town of Greenburgh cable channel, and are available at the Town Library, and on the Town website. If you know a WW-II Veteran who has not been videotaped please contact the committee at

914-989-1540 to schedule an interview.

 

RESOLUTION PASSED BY VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE:

In response to the ongoing discussions about the new tax assessments in the town, your committee felt it was necessary to pass the following resolution and send to Paul Feiner, Greenburgh Town Supervisor:

"The Town of Greenburgh, Veteran's Advisory Committee, does not support any modifications, plans, initiatives, or budget processes that may result in any reduction to Veteran Property Tax benefits and/or exemptions."

 

VETERANS RECOGNITION BAR-B-Q:

The annual Greenburgh Veterans Recognition Bar-B-Q will be held on Thursday September 29, 2016 from 5PM-8PM. All veterans are urged to attend this event. This year there will be informational tables on site, providing veterans with a range of benefits that are available. Please insure you make time to join us for a great evening, and the committee promises the speeches will be reduced from prior years.

 

FIND OUR TOWN VETERANS CAMPAIGN:

The Veterans Advisory Committee is continuing its outreach program to identify veterans in the town that are not on our mailing list. This list is maintained with the strictest confidentially and is not released to any outside sources. If you know a fellow veteran not on our mailing list, please have them contact Supervisor Paul Feiner at 914-989-1540.

 

 

WEST POINT MILITARY ACADEMY TOURS:

Committee member Carmine DiPasquale has arranged for private tours of the West Point Military Academy for veterans and their families. The cost of the tour is $25.00. The cost includes transportation and lunch. The next tour will be on Thursday,

June 9, 2016, and will depart from Anthony Veteran Park at 8:00AM. Please contact Carmine DiPasquale, at 914-564-6875 for additional information, and to reserve your spot for the tour. The deadline to register for the tour is May 26, 2016. 

 

HUDSON VALLEY HONOR FLIGHTS:

The Hudson Valley Honor Flight provides World War II Veterans with an opportunity to travel by plane to the WW-II Memorial in Washington D.C. The flights are free to all

World War II Veterans in recognition of their sacrifice in preserving our Nation’s Freedom. All transportation, and meals are included at no charge. If you know a World War II Veteran please encourage them to take part in these terrific flights. Volunteers are also needed to accompany these flights. INFORMATION ABOUT RECENT REASSESSMENT CHALLENGES:

As many of you know there has been a major property reassessment for all Town of Greenburgh properties. If you have questions regarding your individual reassessment contact the Town Assessor, Edye McCarthy at 914-989-1520 to schedule an appointment to review your assessment. The deadline for reassessment modifications is June 21, 2016.

 

TUITION FREE MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREES FOR VETERANS:

Mercy College is currently offering veterans tuition free Master of Science Degrees in Mathematics Education. This program is designed to provide a veteran with existing college credits an opportunity to become a math teacher. This program has limited availability and the deadline to register for this program is May 26, 2016.
