NY SPORTS CLUB BAD NEWS
Release Date: September 04, 2019

I have received many calls and emails from residents regarding the future of New York Sports Club on East Hartsdale Avenue, which has signage indicating an imminent closure. The potential closure of this store is frustrating knowing that so many residents appreciate and use this business. While the Town does not typically intervene in private matters between a business and landlord, both parties have been contacted by the Town to see if there is the prospect of a resolution to keep the business at this location. Some of the flooding issues that have caused damage at this business in the past will hopefully no longer occur as the property owner is undertaking building upgrades to prevent interior flooding. In the event that the business ceases, I would hope that given the volume of responses by residents valuing a gym here, a new gym operator is found. A replacement gym requires no land use approvals and likely only a building permit if some modifications are proposed to the interior. New York Sports Club is a business that has been great in the Town and an anchor for the Hartsdale downtown.

This sports club is special to the town. It opened in 2004 when there were many vacancies on the avenue. At one point almost half of the Avenue was vacant.  The club became an anchor for the avenue –helped us attract new restaurants and businesses to the avenue  and led to the revitalization of the street with many new restaurants. The momentum from the club also led to the town allocating funds to create a beautiful new Veterans’s memorial park at DeSanti Plaza. Next year Metro North will build elevators at the Hartsdale train station – which will make the train station disabled accessible.  We are determined to make East Hartsdale Ave even better and if the sports club does leave will continue to work hard to make East Hartsdale Ave a vibrant and a terrific destination point.

EPA Announces Updated Chemical Review Tool. EPA) is continuing its commitment to transparency by making additional information about new chemical notices available to the public on the agency's website. Visitors to the updated chemical review status tracker can view and search monthly updates for any active notice by case number. "By making this tracker available online, for the first time the public will easily be able to learn where a particular new chemical is in the EPA review process," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. "With this step the agency is following through on its commitment to transparency and is providing applicants, stakeholders and the public with an easy-to-use tool to monitor the progress of new chemical safety reviews."

Water Infrastructure Loans to Tualatin Valley Water District and the City of Hillsboro Total Nearly $640 Million. EPA announced two Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loans-one to Tualatin Valley Water District and the other to the City of Hillsboro, marking the first time that WIFIA has provided financing for two individual borrowers partnering on a joint project. "EPA's nearly $640 million WIFIA loans will help ensure that the Tualatin Valley Water District and Hillsboro in Oregon have access to a clean and reliable supply of water that is built to the highest seismic safety standards. These WIFIA loans will also generate significant cost savings for residents and create over 4,000 well-paying jobs," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. When completed, this system will provide the Tualatin Valley Water District and Hillsboro additional seismically resilient water supply capacity, including intake facilities, over 30 miles of pipes, a water treatment plant, and two storage reservoirs to serve 400,000 residents and businesses in Washington County.

Federal Partnership to Build Nationwide Resilience to Natural Disasters. EPA joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other partners to announce the agency's participation in the National Mitigation Investment Strategy (NMIS). The NMIS provides a national, whole-community approach to investments in mitigation activities and risk management across government and private sectors. "Investing in mitigation efforts will enable EPA to better protect human health and the environment in the face of natural disasters," said EPA's Acting Associate Administrator of the Office of Homeland Security Ted Stanich. Recent examples of EPA's continued dedication and investment in mitigation strategies across the country include: Regional Resilience Technical Assistance, Integrating Water Quality and Nature-Based Approaches into Hazard Mitigation Plans, Building Flood Resilience in Vermont, and others.

The Science of Wildfire Smoke. This summer, EPA tested air monitoring equipment during wildfires and studying wildfire emissions. The work is part of a scientific effort to evaluate regulatory and low-cost air sampling equipment during smoke conditions, better understand the chemistry of smoke, and improve models used to forecast where smoke from wildland fires will travel. The Mobile Ambient Smoke Investigation Capability study began in May and collects air measurements from both regulatory-grade and low-cost air sensors to determine their performance capabilities during large and intense wildfires. Read more about this research and watch a video about studying wildfire using drones:

Protect your Pooch! Toxic algae blooms now occur in water bodies in every state in the nation. Toxic algae can sicken people but is especially harmful to animals. Don't let your dog drink or swim in water if it's slimy, looks like foam, or might have a strange color. Small clusters of dog deaths have been reported in each of the past three summers after pets were exposed to toxic algae. Learn more about protecting your dog from harmful algae blooms. International Dog Day is August 26 and is a reminder to find ways to keep your dog healthy - outdoors and in.

FYI - Federal Challenge Winners:

  • Federal Green Challenge Winners Save Taxpayers' Money and Promote Efficiency. EPA recognized federal facilities for conserving resources and saving taxpayers' money as part of the Federal Green Challenge (FGC). The challenge is a national effort under the EPA's Sustainable Materials Management Program, which encourages federal agencies to lead by example in reducing the federal government's environmental impact. "EPA is recognizing facilities across the federal government for their leadership in improving waste management, conserving water, and other important efforts to improve environmental outcomes," said Administrator Wheeler.

  • EPA and Federal Partners Announce Winners of Water Quality "Challenge". EPA and four federal partners announced the winners of a technology-accelerating water quality challenge, demonstrating how data from low cost water quality monitoring sensors can be used to inform local-scale nutrient management decisions. For this challenge, six teams deployed and collected data from two or more nutrient sensors for at least three months and sought to demonstrate how local communities can use the collected data to inform nutrient management.
