PARKS PRESERVES AND TRAILWAYS
TAXTER RIDGE PARK PRESERVE
In March, 2004, the Town of Greenburgh along with the state and Westchester County each contributed one-third of the purchase price to acquire nearly 200 acres of open space, which will be preserved as parkland and protected from future development. The unique parcel, known as Taxter Ridge, is considered the "Gateway to Westchester" and is the largest undeveloped tract of land in Southern Westchester County.
It has a stunning topography which features natural rock ledges, woodlands, streams, and wetlands. The Town of Greenburgh will operate the Parkland. Thanks to this partnership, Taxter Ridge will be enjoyed for many generations to come.
Taxter Ridge is located south of Interstate 287 in Westchester County. For more information, call 693-8985.
HART'S BROOK PARK AND PRESERVE
This 122.94 acre parcel located at 156 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, NY was purchased through an inter-governmental cooperative land agreement with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, the County of Westchester, and the Town of Greenburgh.
The 2.5 miles of the preserve's trails are open to the public. The new pristine woodlands that cover most of the tract contain an abundant variety of native flora and fauna, with streams, ponds, meadows and geologic features of interest. A smaller section of the property had been developed as a more formal horticultural environment that includes specimen trees, bushes and rolling lawns.
GLENVILLE WOODS
This 40-acre park preserve was purchased through the appropriations of fund from the Open Space Institute, New York State, Westchester County and the Town of Greenburgh. The property is maintained by the Greenburgh Department of Parks and Recreation.
This beautiful woodland enhances other adjoining parkland located off Route 119, near the Tarrytown border and is within walking distance of public transportation.
SOUTH COUNTY TRAILWAY
Many resident walkers, runners, skaters and bikers can take advantage of the SOUTH COUNTY TRAILWAY managed by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
The rustic trailway features a 5.6 mile, 10' wide paved path that follows the former route of the Putnam Railroad's right of way from Rte. 119 South to Farragut Ave. in Hastings. It also features seven bridges that have been rehabilitated including a historic deck truss bridge at Woodlands Lake. Also, historical interpretative plaques have been placed at the site of all six former railroad stations along the trailway to commemorate the various stops made by the "Old Put" line.
