A woman was hit at the intersection outside Starbucks yesterday in downtown Ardsley. She wasn't seriously injured but this accident highlights the dangers when pedestrians cross speedy areas. Those who cross the Saw Mill RIver Road in Ardsley have seen other cars driving fast and not stopping when pedestrians are crossing. I think that since Saw Mill RIver Road is a NYS road that NYS should hire a traffic consultant who would review this crossing and make recommendations for pedestrian safety at the location. Perhaps, they have traffic engineers on their staff who are qualified to address this. We can't wait till there is another accident--an accident that could be more serious. I also think an improved crosswalk is needed near the new affordable apartments across from Macy Park. Some of the owners of the apartments cross the busy street --and it's not safe.
A few weeks ago I received a call from a resident of Edgemont who lives near Ardsley Road/ Fort Hill Road. There was a pedestrian accident (also not serious) at the intersection of Ardsley Road and Fort Hill Road. Even one minor accident is too much. We need to make sure that children, caregivers, parents who cross Ardsley Road and Fort Hill Road are safe.
To help with this problem the Greenburgh Police Department, Department of Public Works are making a concerted effort to minimize dangers at this intersection and identify action steps to improve its safety. There are some obstacles interfering with the site vision distance that will be addressed. I plan to request funding funding for a professional traffic consultant who will consider the possibility of identifying other actions that we could take to further assist with safety improvements at this intersection. The study will include the possibility of a full light at the location. The consultant will need to study whether a light could be installed without negatively contributing to significant traffic backups. We need to install a very safe crosswalk for pedestrians to use. But, don't want to create the illusion of safety.
We are close to finalizing plans for a safer crosswalk at Edgemont Road/Ardsley Road. I anticipate that this crosswalk will be installed sometime this summer or before... A more difficult crosswalk that needs attention is the Lynwood/Ardsley Road location.
Any other crosswalks that are dangerous? Please let us know. Pedestrian safety is extremely important. My e mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
